Maggio Musicale
23

The Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino owes its name to the prestigious Maggio Musicale Festival: not only the oldest festival in Italy and third in Europe, but, together with Bayreuth and Salzburg, one of the most authoritative and prominent in the world. After the birth of the Stabile Orchestrale Fiorentina in 1928, which soon became one of the most important orchestras in Europe, the Festival was founded in 1933 in Florence and immediately acquired a strong and important international vocation, establishing itself as a nerve center for the dissemination of great European musical culture by indicating, proposing and affirming new and unprecedented ways of a vision of performing arts that involved in an interdisciplinary way all the performing arts, in the repertoire as well as in contemporary compositions. The May Festival has therefore always been a point of reference for the greatest names in musical entertainment: conductors, directors, artists of the highest importance who take turns on the Florentine stage of the glorious Teatro Comunale first and of the Teatro del Maggio now. It is worth remembering who continued the work of building the musical value of the orchestra and the choir after Gui, the founder of the Maggio Orchestra, that is, the other great musical directors and stable: Mario Rossi, Bruno Bartoletti, Riccardo Muti, Fabio Luisi, and for over thirty years Zubin Mehta, inextricably linked to the Maggio and current principal conductor emeritus for life. The current Teatro del Maggio, inaugurated in 2014, has adopted its emblematic name and continues to perpetrate its prestige in the alternation of Festival (which takes place from April to July) and Season.
