Museo Nazionale del Bargello

The Museum houses the most important collection of Renaissance sculptures; masterpieces by Donatello, Luca della Robbia, Verrocchio, Michelangelo, Cellini and Gianbologna are on display here. It is located in an imposing building built between the thirteenth and the fourteenth century and used as house for the Captain of the People and the Council of Justice. From 1574 to 1858 it was converted into a prison (“bargello” was the grand ducal guards´ commander in chief). The museum, established in 1865, also hosts prestigious collections of "minor arts" (bronzes, ceramics, jewels, ivories, medals, fabrics and ancient weapons) partly from the Medici' collections and partly from private donations.
