Opened in 1995, Salvatore Ferragamo museum was established by the Ferragamo family inside the homonymous company, to acquaint an international audience with the artistic qualities of Salvatore Ferragamo and the role he played in the history of not only shoes but international fashion as well. Exhibitions are held every year inside the museum that, starting from the experience of Salvatore Ferragamo, his life story, creations, customers he served and values he believed in, cover also other spheres like art, architecture, design, economic and social history, philosophy, with the collaboration of important museums. The Museum relies on the collaboration of important museums, collectors, art galleries and the direct collaboration of world-renowned artists.
The idea for the museum initially came about when an exhibition was organised at Palazzo Strozzi on the history of its founder Salvatore Ferragamo. The exhibition became of travelling type over the years, and hosted by some of the world’s most prestigious museums, such as the Victoria and Albert in London, the County Museum of Los Angeles, the New York Guggenheim, the Sogetsu Kai Foundation in Tokyo, and the Museo de Bellas Artes in Mexico.
