The Montagnola Tomb is an Etruscan funerary monument of Orientalizing type dating back to the 7th century B.C. The architectural structure is reminiscent of the great Mycenaean tholos tomb, with the false dome of projecting slabs and the impressive dromos leading to the circular funeral hall. Above the tomb, there is a large mound of about 70 metres in diameter, featuring a long uncovered corridor. The portal, consisting of large jambs’ monoliths and architrave, leads to an internal corridor entirely built in alberese stone with overhang roof, with rows of progressively projecting slabs almost touching each other, creating a sort of pitched nave; two cells open up on the side, covered using the same technique, while the back leading to the main chamber is characterised by two pseudo pointed arches. The main chamber is circular with overhanging ogive roof, supported by a central square pillar, stuccoed and featuring inscriptions. A layer of clay was placed on the exterior of the entire monument to render the funeral chambers waterproof, covered by earth and stones to form an actual mound.
